THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY Volume 1
Boston: Phillips Samson, 1857. 1st Edition. Hardcover. A distinctive copy of the first volume of the most famous American magazine of literature, art and politics in a custom cloth binding undertaken, presumably, by the publisher. An unblemished binding of Volume 1, Numbers I - VII from November 1857 through May 1859. Stout 8vo, finely ribbed dark brown cloth, blind-stamped covers with gilt to spine, 882 pages. The magazines themselves are printed by Phillips Samson. The binding identifies Ticknor & Fields as the publisher, pressed in gilt at the foot of spine and with "T & F' blind-stamped at the center of the covers. The idea for the magazine came from Moses Dresser Phillips in the fall of 1857. The magazine, in some format at varying schedules, has been published since then. Near Fine. Item #013908
