DEERBROOK: A NOVEL (3 volumes)
London: Edward Moxon, 1839. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First edition. Harriet Martineau (1802 - 1876) was an English social theorist, who wrote from a sociological, holistic, religious and feminine angle. She was also translator of the works of Auguste Comte, and, distinctively, for a woman writer at the time, earned enough to support herself. Martinieau traveled extensively in the United States in 1834-36, an experience which confirmed her abolitionist views. Politically active, she was an early supporter of the suffrage movement. Dearborn, Martineau's first full-length novel is a work of social realism, set in a semi-industrialized English town, and portrays a failed love affair between a physician and his sister-in-law. It was considered her most successful novel, and was published, as presented in this copy, in the three-volume format, popular in British 19thC publishing. This set is a very nice trio: olive-green half leather over marbleized boards, with the spine decorated in gilt with maroon leather title and volume labels. Some modest edgewear. Internals fine; text appears unread. Uncommon in the marketplace in first edition and in condition this nice. Neat owner name with Christmas 1842 date upper corner fly in volume I. Near Fine.
