NY: Murray Hill Publishing, 1890. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The last title in Dr. Foote's series entitled "Science in Story", this volume dedicated to taking on the taboo topic of sexual development in youth. Edward Bliss Foote (1829-1906) was an American medical doctor, writer, and advocate for birth control. In 1858, he published Medical Common Sense, which contained frank discussion of sexual health for the general public. He was a co-founder of the Free Speech League. Here, Foote tells the story through the character of Sammy Tubbs, a child of slave parents who migrated north after Lincoln proclaimed slaves free men. Sammy was a door-boy for a physician who imparted physiological knowledge of sexual function with the boy. Foote opposed censorship, and objected to the Comstack Act, which regulated material sent through the US Post. In 1874 he was charged with violating postal law for mailing a pamphlet which advocated families limiting their size through contraception. He also sent a $25 check to Susan B. Anthony when she was fined $100 for voting in the 1872 Presidential election. A near fine copy.
