Philadelphia: Dorrance, 1945. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Katherine Hepburn. Novel of a young woman from Indiana who leaves behind the young man she's supposed to marry and at university in Chicago takes up with a professor much older than she who "also wishes to accept her strange ideas about marriage" (according to the dustjacket blurb). Ostensibly, romance fiction, there's little (if anything) romantic in the tale. Curiously the author's treatment of feminism is rather vague, at times unpronounced, but integral to the story: her implied notions of sexuality (there's none in the book) enigmatic, which makes the presentation to Hepburn, given her own sexual enigma, intriguing. Book near fine, dustjacket is stained at spine and rear panel and missing some pieces along edges and corners. We could find no biographical information about author McClintic anywhere, nor any indication she wrote anything else. OCLC lists only five institutions with the title. Very Good / Good.
