Joliet: P F Volland, 1929. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Justin C. Gruelle (1889-1978) was son of noted landscape painter Richard B. Gruelle, and brother of Johnny Gruelle, was a popular illustrator and creator of the Raggedy Ann books. Justin studied art with his father from an early age, and moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League. After 1910 he settled in Connecticut and wrote and illustrated several children's books, most notably A Mother Goose Parade. Unusually well-preserved copy, in broken pictorial box (top and bottom intact, sides unattached or missing). Two small spots of abrasion upper left corner front cover (where it appears dried school glue was flecked off evidenced by narrow stain strip, which is a pity, as otherwise new (by dint of broken box). Internals as new, really. Near Fine. Item #011942
