Paris: 1787. Presumed First Edition. Soft cover. Two uncommon pamphlets of criticism of works in the 1787 Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Between 1748 and 1890 it was arguably the greatest annual or biennial art event in the Western world. This 1787 salon was just two years before the Revolution of 1789. OBSERVATIONS is printed by Chez les Marchands de Nouveautes, front cover detached, rear missing, 32 pages (complete) with critical discussions of Vien, de Lagrenee, Brenet, Sivee, Vincent, Callet, David, Regnault, le Barbier l'Aine, Taillasson, Peyron, Perrin, Robin, Monnier, Monsiau, le Marquis de Turpin, de l'Espinasse, Roslin, le Brun, Madame Guiard, Vestier, Roland de la Porte, Hue, Valenciennes, Nivard, Taunai and Bilcoq. Worldcat identifies 8 institutions that have this item. DIALOGUE's has two parts. The front title page identifies the paper as "Premiere Partie. La second est sous presse" (the second part to be published soon). No printer is identfiied. Lacking covers front and rear, 39 pages (complete), some staining largely to verso last page. The first part runs through page 24, with a 6 page preface, followed by "Dialogue entre l'auteur et un peintre", the author a member of the artistocracy ("M. l'Aristarque") with the painter unidentified.
