Contains Pulitzer Prize winning poet James Merrill earliest works while he was finishing his undergraduate degree at Amherst College, after returning from WWII military service. Includes three Merril lpoems "The Summer Park", "The Wintry Garden" and "Beginner's Greek" plus an essay "The Transformation of Rilke" Merrill's first book, "Jim's Book - A Collection of Poems and Short Stories" was published privately when he was 15 years old. The poems in this Yale review published spring 1946 are among his first published "adult" works and predate both the scarce book of poems, "The Black Swan" printed privately in Athens later in the fall of 1946, and "First Poems", his first poetry collection published commercially by Knopf in 1951. The editor's notes in this Yale acknowledge the new poet simply: "James Merrill has had a group of poems accepted by 'Poetry A Magazine of Verse. He is now studying at Amherst. Other contributors to this edition of this review are William Carlos Williams, Edith Weaver, Doris Dana, Robert Greer Cohn, Ellen Kate Green, John Maher Murphy, Harvey Shapiro, Byron Vazakas, Thomas McMahon, Robert Phelps, Lee Richard Hayman, and Keith Botsford.
