Wharton: "Dear John - Here is my annaul contribution to the firm's liabilities. Thanks for being so patent about it. Affectionately, Elmer April 1940" Rice was one of the founders of the Playwright's Company, along with Mazwell Anderson, Robert E. Sherwood, and Kurt Weil in 1938. Atty John F. Wharton (also one of the founders of the prestigious Manhattan law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison) . Wharton was the business and legal brain of The Playwrights' Company; Rice is, with self-deprecating humor, acknowledging this was teh play he was committed to write for the Company that season and hoping it will be a financial success.
