TWO ON AN ISLAND

TWO ON AN ISLAND

NY: Coward McCann, 1940. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Rare first edition of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Elmer Rice, inscribed to fellow board member of The Playwrights' Company John F. Wharton: "Dear John - Here is my annual contribution to the firm's liabilities. Thanks for being so patient about it. Affectionately, Elmer April 1940" Rice was one of the founders of the Playwright's Company, along with Maxwell Anderson, S. N. Behrman, Robert E. Sherwood, Sidney Howard, and Attorney John F. Wharton (also one of the founders of the prestigious Manhattan law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison) in 1938. Wharton was the business and legal brain of The Playwrights' Company; Rice is, with self-deprecating humor, acknowledging this was the play he was committed to write for the Company that season and hoping it will be a financial success. Rare in first edition, the inscription reveals a fascinating chapter in NY theatre history. SOCIAL MOVEMENTS DRAMA THEATER NEW YORK CITY. Very Good + / Very Good +. Item #011582
