Copy owned by English fencer and antiquarian Alfred Hutton (1839 - 1910) and bound in the customary fashion for which his library was known, this title in half vellum over brown cloth - with red leather lettering pieces and gilt decorations on the spine and Hutton's name in Gothic type and his armorial crest blocked in gold on the upper covers, gte, ribbon marker. A very sound copy, firmly bound, vellum moderately soiled, some incidental foxing here and there internally, but quite nice overall. 20thC ownership name ffe. Hutton was a Victorian officer of the King's Dragoon Guards, writer, antiquarian, and swordsman and, along with a small group of fencers, originated the first English revival of historical fencing. Hutton bequeathed his fine collection of fencing and duelling literature, with some admirable specimens of oriental sword-cutlery, to the Victoria and Albert Museum. At least 276 books from his collection of fencing books - Hutton Bequest - can be found in the National Art Library in the V&A Museum. Further collections of books formerly owned by him are the Corble Collection, located at the Universiteitsbibliotheek at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and the Emil Fick Library, located at the Livrustkammaren (Sweden).
