Mr. Bodley Abroad

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1881. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Paper-covered boards with an illustrative design that is an exemplar of how Japanese design influenced book decoration. With it's sever diagonals in black and white interspersed with dream-like illustrations of snow-capped mountains and the moon, the design has, presciently, a Surrealistic or Avant-Garde feel to it. Indeed, a decorative binding - in 1881 - way ahead of its time. Covers soiled, and flaked at hinges, worn at edges all around, foxing to tissue guard and frontispiece, still solidly bound. 8vo, 210p + 2p ads, illustrated, pictorial endpapers too show Japansese influence. Minor stain top margin not affecting text. Bookseller ticket of W. Bangs Williams of Providence RI on lowere right corner front pastedown. A solid, unsophisticated copy. VG-. Item #012044
