POESIAS ESCOJIDAS (1899 - 1917)

NY: The Hispanic Society of America, 1917. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Scarce limited edition of the early work of Spanish poet Juan Ramon Jimenez (1881 - 1958), who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Scarcer, still, as it is inscribed by Jimenez. Octavo, tan linen with gilt titles front and spine, bevelled edges, top edge gilt, sides uncut, 350 pages, frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. Limitation statement (translated) reads "600 copies printed by The Hispanic Society of America in Madrid each signed by the author and not intended for sale". This copy has a printed stub bound-in at dedication stating that "subsequent to publication it was decided to put 100 copies for sale": this copy numbered 63 on the limitation stub. Printed in Madrid by Portanet in August 1917. Jimenez inscribed the book on the verso of the flyleaf in Madrid in January 1920. Jimenez' handwriting is largely indecipherable but the inscription roughly translated appears to be to a woman "Aileen (indiscernible)" thanking her for her support. The frontispiece portrait is a duotone copy of a 1916 oil portrait of Jimenez by Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla, which still hangs at the Society in Manhattan. ÍThe book is dedicated to Mr. and Mrs, Archer M. Huntington, Mr. Huntington being not only the founder of the Hispanic Society, but also, through its offices, a patron of Jimenez' New York visit. The sixteen poems in the book are numbered I - XVI and include one of his Jimenez' best known works, Sonetos espirituales 1914-1916. The book was published following Jimenez' first visit to New York in 1916, after an extended hospitalization in Spain and France in 1914 and 1915 for a nervous breakdown. In New York, he married Spanish-born writer and poet Zenobia Camprubí. Upon the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he and Zenobia went into exile in Puerto Rico, where he settled in 1946. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1956, two years before his death. Cloth darkened a tad around extremities of covers, more so at spine. Internals quite nice. A solid copy of a title, seldom found. Near Fine. Item #012019
