Rumsfeld, Donald. Early revised draft, RUMSFELD'S RULES, plus photocopy of typed letter signed, December 1991.

Chicago: Photocopied draft by office of author, 1991. 1st Edition. No Binding. The famous (or infamous) Secretary of Defense and one of the principal architects of the Iraq War (currently portrayed by Steve Carrell in the movie VICE about Vice President Dick Cheney) began composing his own "words of wisdom" about how to be a personal and professional success in 1974. Harper Collins published his final version, fully titled RUMSFELD'S RULES: LEADERSHP LESSONS IN BUSINESS, POLITICS, WAR AND LIFE, in May 2013. In 2001, Rumsfeld released a public draft, which was published as an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal. Prior to that, on occasion, Rumsfeld might have shared typed manuscripts of his practical philosophy with colleagues and associates from worlds of commerce, politics, the arts and academe. Such was the case with this copy of his manuscript, 11 typed pages, including cover sheet, entitled RUMSFELD'S RULES and captioned "First Edition - 12/01/74/ Copyright 1980 / Donald Rumsfeld/ All Rights Reserved / Revised 12/91", with cover letter, dated December 16, 1991, on Rumsfeld's letterhead at General Instrument based in Chicago, where he was Chairman and CEO, to Michael Janeway (1940 - 2014), who at the time was Dean of Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Il. Janeway's widow relates that the reason why she and husband Michael, former Boston Globe editor, and Rumsfeld, Fortune 500 corporate executive had met was that they were guests of Michael McCaskey, President of the Chicago Bears, in the owners skybox at a home game. (Public relations savvy, it was McCaskey's apparent custom to introduce leading civic figures from the Chicago area in his private stadium box.) Rumsfeld, in the cover letter, writes "It was certainly a pleasure to be with you and Barbara at the Bears game. It was a fine victory and certainly a most enjoyable afternoon." With a single-sheet Christmas card, stained, from the Rumsfelds to the Janeways included. Unique. We've not seen or heard of a draft available before the draft Rumsfeld released in 2001. Near Fine.
